Many visitors to Lanzarote assume that they know what to expect when they arrive on the island. But they are often pleasantly surprised to find that this Canarian island refutes the usual Spanish holiday hotspot clichs.
It isnt awash with apartment blocks that destroy the views of the sea. It isnt the home of timeshare touts either. And it isnt just a sun, sea and sangria destination, as the rugged landscapes lend themselves to plenty of activities and sports.
Increasingly, holidaymakers who visit this Canarian island may want to go trekking for the day, discovering some of the hidden beauties that lie off the beaten track. Such as the beautiful valleys in the northern half of the island.
Whilst other visitors may decide to explore the island on the back of a bike. Which can sometimes prove an uphill struggle, due to the terrain. But cyclists are in good company, as Lanzarote annually welcomes the athletes who participate in the Iron Man competition. Who will cover 180 kilometres by bike.
So tourists who indulge in a few sporting activities can rest assured that at the end of the day, if they need to be pampered, there are some good quality hotels in Lanzarote. Many of which have the latest in spa and wellness centres for those aching limbs.
Even holidaymakers who have opted for villas in Lanzarote instead, will find that many come with a Jacuzzi as well as a pool. And with the hotel spas open to guests, there is no reason why villa-dwellers cant pop in for a soak too.
For those who want the pampering without the strenuous effort, theres always the option to visit a different spa every day. Something which can easily be achieved if they are mobile. And as car hire in Lanzarote comes at affordable rates, there is no reason not to have a set of wheels whilst you are there.
Quite apart from exploring the services of the local hotels, there is also a wide range of restaurants. Some located in the most interesting places, such as old castles and underground volcanic tunnels. There is even one built over a dormant volcano.
And Lanzarote is a fabulous place to explore, offering a mix of natural wonders and man made marvels such as the volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park and the creations of the famous local artist Cesar Manrique.
